The 2014 DBCT P/L Charity Cricket Cup
24-Jan-2014
The Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal P/L (DBCTP/L) Charity Cricket Cup was held on Friday, 7 March at Harrup Park. The match was strongly contested by both teams, with two Queensland Bulls Masters, Brendan Nash and Chris Swan, joining the Daly Bay Demons and the Barbarians XI for the game.
While the Barbarians were the match winners, the real winner of the night was All Abilities Mackay, the chosen recipient for this year’s donations.
The event rose over $25,000 for the new charity and will allow All Abilities Mackay to deliver new programs for Mackay people with a disability.
DBCT P/L System Maintainer - Mechanical, and one of the event organisers, Manny Tomerini said they were hoping to at least match the $18,000 that was raised last year for Mackay Riding for the Disabled.
“There’s a lot of friendly rivalry between the Daly Bay team and the Barbarians, which is mainly made up of guys from contractors onsite.
“We were blown away by the generous donations from not only DBCT P/L, but also our other major sponsors: Veyance, Custom Fluid Power and BMA .”
All Abilities Mackay founder, Bec Nicol, said the charity being the beneficiary of the cricket match would significantly improve many lives of people with a disability in town, with the implementation of activities from this funding already starting.
“People with a disability will now be able to apply for a scholarship with All Abilities Mackay that will allow them to attend a specialised computer skills TAFE course.
“We’ve also scheduled an adult music therapy course, which is something service providers, families and individuals have been waiting on for quite some time,” Mrs Nicol said.
The charity cricket match funding will also be used to improve community access to events, provide a family fun day for All Ability Mackay members, and allow families to access workshops with carers for parents who have young children, with more initiatives yet to be announced.
DBCT P/L Interim CEO, Matt Doyle, said the charity cricket match was an employee initiative that has gone from a friendly game between workers and contractors to one of the most successful fundraising events in Mackay.
“Our employees have done a great job with this event, and to surpass the $18,000 raised in 2013 is a phenomenal effort.
“I think they also picked a very worthy charity with All Abilities Mackay. All the employees who organised the event and participated should be proud of their achievements,” Mr Doyle said.
Event co-organiser, Darren Werder said the event would be shifting to September to avoid the poor weather conditions experienced at the last two events.
“Everyone is keen, so we will be holding a second match this year in September, and then the event will stay around that time each year,” Mr Werder said.
Event co-organiser, Manny Tomerini, said the Bulls Masters players were keen to return to Mackay and participate again.
“Brendan Nash and Chris Swan had a great time and are keen to return, but with more professional players to both participate in the game and to host workshops for aspiring cricketer juniors.”
