Frame work, Pillars and Focus Areas

The DBCT Sustainability Strategy consists of an over-arching framework that is broken up into four pillars:

  • People

  • Environment

  • Business Performance

  • Community and Partnerships

Each of these four pillars are aligned to a long-term strategic goal. The pillars have focus areas that sit underneath them, which were all mapped to a materiality survey undertaken with stakeholders to help identify what areas we should focus on.

People

DBCT encourages a positive culture of safety, diversity, transparency, innovative thinking and empowerment of our people, and recognise our people are key to our continued success.

By offering ongoing learning and development opportunities focused thinking, we are empowering our people and future-proofing our workforce. The health and safety of our people is paramount, whether they be employees, contractors or visitors to the site. The contribution our people make to a sustainable future will be critical to our success. We encourage and value their ideas and participation. For more information on Health & Safety, click here.

Environment

At DBCT we acknowledge and respect our unique location and are committed to being a leader in environmental management.

Operating adjacent to neighbouring communities and within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area brings with it a responsibility to ensure our operations continue to have no detrimental impact on people or the unique ecosystem.

DBCT is committed to protecting and enhancing the environment through leading environmental management practices, the use of innovative technologies and strong partnerships with environmental groups.

DBCT recognises climate change, and will continue our focused action on the sustainability of terminal operations. We will identify where we can take action to optimise efficiency and reduce emissions by reviewing our operations and looking for opportunities to use existing and innovative technologies, including renewable energy sources.
At DBCT we are also planning in the context of transitioning global economy.

Handling our responsibilities…
DBI and the terminal operator, DBCT P/L, are both dedicated to managing the terminal’s operations to limit its impact on the environment.

Under the Terminal Operator’s contract (‘OMC’), the independent terminal Operator – DBCT P/L, has responsibility for implementation and operation of environmental management systems consistent with the provisions of the Environmental Authority (‘EA’), negotiated with the Department of Environment and Science (formerly the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection). DBCT P/L is deemed to have daily management control of the site and so has regulatory responsibility/accountability for the daily environmental performance of the terminal.

The Environmental Management System (EMS) put in place by DBCT P/L demonstrates the commitment to not just meeting environmental obligations, but also the expectations of stakeholders and the community. More information regarding the EMS and its ISO14001 certification can be found by via the following link to the DBCT P/L website below.

The focus of environmental management includes limiting the impact on local air quality, protecting water resources, limiting noise emissions and protecting the local habitat. More information regarding the way each of these areas are managed can be found via our website.

Each of these pillars are aligned to a long-term strategic goal which we are aiming to achieve this by 2030.

To help us achieve these goals specific focus areas have been identified for each pillar based on the outcome of the materiality assessment.  This provides a framework for our short and long-term initiatives and programs which will contribute towards achieving the long-term strategic goals.

Business Performance

At DBCT we strive to deliver prosperity by optimising terminal and supply chain performance.

DBCT is supporting regional economic prosperity as a major local employer and ‘buying local’ wherever possible. DBCT’s annual direct contribution to the Queensland economy exceeds $280 million and our essential role in the coal export supply chain is an additional indirect contribution. The coal shipped through DBCT accounts for around 35 per cent of Queensland coal royalty revenues, which comprised approximately 7 per cent of the state’s revenue 2018-2019*.

Ensuring a sustainable terminal is critical to providing a viable coastal gateway for the coal export trade. Our collaboration and communication with supply chain partners – mining companies, rail operators, ship owners and shipping agents – encourages transparency, efficiency and improved performance across the supply chain.

Queensland Budget Strategy and Outlook. 2018-2019 coal royalties and land rents of $4.4bn, State revenue of $60.1bn.

Community and Partnerships

At DBCT we connect with the community and local and global partners to drive positive change.

DBCT’s partnerships and connections with the community, industry and researchers both locally and across the globe will help us achieve our sustainability objectives.

Handling our responsibilities…
At DBCT P/L, we are active and long-term supporters of the local community. We inject hundreds of thousands of dollars into the community to support events, initiatives, community groups and not-for-profit organisations to improve the livability of the Mackay Region.
